Headstone of my Great Great Grandmother Calvary Cemetery, Colville, Washington

A precious one from us has gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled
God in his wisdom has recalled
The boon his love had given
And though the body moulders here
The soul is safe in heaven

Fair flower thou hast been
plucked to adorn paradise
Thy memory is enshrined
in the heart of thy Mother

Thus clinging to that
slight spar within her arms
the mother drifted out
upon the dark and unknown sea

Dearest loved one we have laid thee in the peaceful graves embrace
But thy memory will be cherished till we see thy heavenly face

I lived in Helena twice, once in the late 70's when I was a young teenager, and again in the 80's when I was in my early 20's. The second time I lived in Helena I was a brownie and girl scout leader for my little sister's troop. One of the things we did was to go to the Benton Avenue Cemetery and look at some of the epitaphs there. I can't remember the details, we may have combined it with a clean up day and other things for badges. I remember looking at the epitaphs because I wrote some of them down. They're on a KCAP envelope that my paycheck had come in. The epitaphs copied on this page are the ones I had copied down on that day.
While making this page I checked on the epitaphs. The ones that start, "A precious one from us has gone" and "Dearest loved one we have laid thee" are commonly used epitaphs. The one that starts, "Thus clinging to that slight spar" is a quote from Charles Dickens. The final one, "Fair flower thou hast been plucked" seems to be original. There was another one that seems really interesting and also original, but it seems I couldn't make it all out at the time and I'm not sure exactly how what I've writen goes together. Hopefully the next time I get back to Helena I can find these headstones and get photographs of them. I intend to start seeking out and taking photos of cemeteries and headstones in the future.
